VOCSMAT: a connectionist-inspired treatment proposal for relational traumas
نویسنده
چکیده
Psychological traumas are the main cause of post-traumatic stress disorder, which can be either simple or complex. Psychological traumas of various kinds are also present in a wide range of psychological conditions, including disorganised attachment, personality disorders, eating disorders, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. For such conditions, traumatic experiences are often regarded as an exacerbating factor of symptoms induced by another major causative agent, often of a genetic-biological nature. The objective of this work is to propose an alternative vision, in which traumatic experiences represent an essential ingredient for the aforementioned conditions. This vision is based on a functional model of the mind, built around the concept of relational value, with ideas borrowed from the fields of computer science, artificial intelligence and neural networks. The analysis of mental dynamics accounts for the use of dissociation as primary response to trauma, explains the emergence of splitting as secondary defence line, and identifies in selective dissociation the tool used by the mind to survive and function in traumatic contexts. Finally, the insight gained through the model is used to sketch a new psycotherapy for psychological traumas.

A symbolic-connectionist theory of relational inference and generalization.
The authors present a theory of how relational inference and generalization can be accomplished within a cognitive architecture that is psychologically and neurally realistic. Their proposal is a form of symbolic connectionism: a connectionist system based on distributed representations of concept meanings, using temporal synchrony to bind fillers and roles into relational structures. The autho...
متن کاملThe Quadripolar Relational Model: an Artificial Intelligence framework for the description of personality disorders
Borderline personality disorder and narcissistic personality disorder are important nosographic entities and have been subject of intensive investigations. The currently prevailing psychodynamic theory for mental disorders is based on the repertoire of defense mechanisms employed. Another line of research is concerned with the study of psychological traumas and dissociation as a defensive respo...
متن کاملContent and Its Vehicles in Connectionist Systems
This paper advocates explicitness about the type of entity to be considered as contentbearing in connectionist systems; it makes a positive proposal about how vehicles of content should be individuated; and it deploys that proposal to argue in favour of representation in connectionist systems. The proposal is that the vehicles of content in some connectionist systems are clusters in the state s...

Abstract This paper by reviewing the main examples of small to medium-scale retractable roof structures covering building courtyards is to present an innovative rigid retractable roof system employing spatial frames for a courtyard of an existing building in Tabriz Islamic Art University. The courtyard is currently used for temporary exhibitions and gatherings whenever permitted by environmenta...
متن کاملComparison of Neural Networks and an Optical Thin-Film Multilayer Model for Connectionist Learning
Current work on connectionist models has been focused largely on artificial neural networks that are inspired by the networks of biological neurons in the human brain. However there are also other connectionist architectures that differ significantly from this biological exemplar. We proposed a novel connectionist learning architecture inspired by the physics associated with optical coatings of...
